Ranunculus- A love story in the garden

Updated: Oct 21

By mid March, I find myself counting the days until I can be surrounded by the beauty of the cut flower garden again. There’s nothing like the thrill of seeing a tiny seed germinate or the first bloom of my butterfly ranunculus, waiting for the sun to bring them to life.

If there’s one flower I am completely obsessed with, it’s ranunculus. Every year, I promise myself that I will give growing them from corms another try. Their delicate, ruffled petals and dreamy colors make them an absolute favorite for wedding bouquets—but growing them? That’s a whole different story.

Ranunculus start from little corms, which honestly look like tiny octopuses, and they can be so tricky to get just right. They need the perfect cool temperatures, just enough moisture but not too much, and a whole lot of patience. I admire growers who seem to have the magic touch, and next year, I am determined to give it another shot!

But every year, I find myself buying them already grown from my favorite nursery -Sam Bridge Nursery & Greenhouses—because let’s be honest, I just need their beauty in my life, one way or another!

Ranunculus will always have a place in my floral designs. Because no matter what, their beauty is worth the effort.

My favorite varieties are "La belle series" with the follwoing colors- salmon, champagne, orange, and pastel mix.

Almost June: The Garden in Full Bloom

And just like that, with the blink of an eye, we are nearing the end of May.

The garden is looking absolutely spectacular. Since my last update, the ranunculus have burst into full bloom, showing off their layers of delicate petals in a rainbow of colors. They’ve been incredibly generous, giving me armfuls of stems to design the dreamiest arrangements.

With the ranunculus season wrapping up, I’ve already pulled the corms to make room for the dahlias. This year, I am saving the corms for the next season—a little act of forward thinking that makes me feel more connected to the rhythm of the garden.

Right now, though, the roses are stealing the show. After three years of nurturing them, they are finally hitting their stride, and the results are breathtaking.

There is always that one bloom that makes you pause before cutting it, just for a second, to take in its quiet magic. For me, it’s the Desdemona Rose by @davidaustinroses. These peachy-pink buds are like a small miracle every spring. As they unfurl, they become soft white blooms kissed with the faintest blush. And their scent? Pure poetry—think almond blossom, a touch of cucumber, and a hint of lemon zest. Nature’s own fine perfume.

Every stem in this garden is grown with care, cut with intention, and designed with love. Thank you for following along this season. It is such a joy to share the beauty of the garden with you.
